Pedestrian Guardrail Reviews

Sam led the removal of pedestrian guardrail at over 200 staggered 'sheep pen' crossings in London, improving the walking experience for thousands of pedestrians daily. Contrary to the fear from some that it would be a safety risk, a subsequent study showed that it actually reduced serious pedestrian collisions by 56%.

However in many parts of the UK the scourge of pedestrian guardrail remains. It causes delays and overcrowding at crossings, is ugly, a maintenance liability and this barrier to walking is contrary to the policy of promoting active travel. Many engineers are too fearful to remove it. We can undertake reviews of pedestrian guardrail and take CDM design responsibility for changes.
